abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe a successful school leader from the perspective of educational leaders. It is part of a larger study on the attributes of successful school management in Malaysia. The larger study is a project on "Improving School Management in Asian Countries", and it was first initiated by the Asian Network of Training and Research Institutions in Educational Planning (ANTRIEP) and supported by the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), Paris, France in 2000. Institut Aminuddin Baki (IAB) which held the chair of ANTRIEP for 2002-2004, agreed to contribute to this larger study, which will be in the form of case studies of successful headteachers. These successful headteachers were selected based on the results of the Aspiring School Award recipients from 1998 to 2002. The data used in this exploration was collected through in-depth interviews. For the purpose of this seminar, this paper presents findings and analysis of only one case. The major themes that emerged from the study include visionary, creative problem solving, continuous learning, having a passion for quality and caring. This paper also calls on the education authorities in Malaysia to re-examine the selection, promotion, training and staff development opportunities for educational leaders in order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of educational leadership in their position and roles. With the challenges and demands of the ever-changing school environment, more effective principals equipped with leadership and management competencies are required to lead schools.
