Abstract
This research was carried out to describe the factors that motivate secondary school students in Maran. This study represents the initial steps in an effort to improve student motivation and learning. The research sample was comprised of 100 students of two secondary schools in Maran. The Multidimensional Motivation Instrument was used to collect the data regarding motivation. The instrument was translated into the Malay Language by three bilingual experts. Six subscales include Achievement Motivation, Academic Self-Concept, Locus of Control, Emotional Self-Concept, Social Self-Concept, and Physical Self-Concept. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistical procedures. The research revealed that factors that highly motivated the secondary school students in Maran were achievement motivation, academic self-concept, and locus of control. Whereas, factors such as social, emotional, and physical self-concepts motivated them moderately. Form One and Form Two students showed low emotional self-concept. In light of the findings of this study, educators and parents need to examine factors that contribute to the low motivation among students, particularly in the aspect of emotional self-concept. As secondary schools in Maran and the Maran District Education Department plan their strategies, serious nsideration toward maximizing each aspect of motivation should dominate the overall program.
